The Cupertino Educational Endowment Foundation (CEEF) is pleased to announce the winner of the 2017 “Sandy Liu Community Service Leadership Award.” This award honors a member of our local community who has demonstrated exemplary leadership in service to the children of the Cupertino Union School District (CUSD).
Sandy Liu was a visionary leader within both the Blue Hills Elementary School community and CUSD. A loving mother of two, Sandy passionately dedicated her life to improving the quality of education for all children. In 2010, for example, she played an instrumental role in leading the collaborative effort of parents, local businesses, local leadership, CUSD, and CEEF to retain 115 K-8 teachers, prevent K-8 teacher reshuffling, and maintain a 20:1 class size ratio in Grades 1 – 3 district-wide by raising $2.5 million in 2.5 months. She battled cancer in a similar way – with courage and persistence, grace and beauty.
This year Lorien Cunningham of Montclaire Elementary School received this award for her unwavering commitment to the educational welfare of the students of CUSD. From face painting fairies, superheroes, and animals on hundreds of little faces at annual school fundraisers and providing years of leadership on both the School Site Council and the Montclaire Parent Teacher Organization Board, to becoming an active member of several district committees, Lori has left a significant legacy of thoughtful and generous service on behalf of our students. She motivates others to become more involved, constantly seeks to expand her own knowledge about the public education system, and always looks for ways to add value.
